The production of legumes and spring onions in Egypt is experiencing a dynamic season, supported by increased and diverse demand, as well as improved weather conditions. This is according to Mostafa Yassien of Helwan Export, who says, "We achieved a year-round cultivation and export of Egyptian spring onions starting from this season."

The exporter states, "We have seen a notable increase in export volumes for both green beans and spring onions this season. This significant growth is directly attributed to the strategic decision to expand cultivation into more hectares across diverse, high-yielding agricultural areas in Egypt. By expanding our dedicated farming area and leveraging high-standard practices, we have successfully increased our overall production capacity and secured a larger, more consistent supply of premium produce for the global market."

Production conditions, including weather conditions, are more favorable this season, according to Yassien. He explains, "Production conditions this season have been significantly better than last year, especially for the early stages of the spring onion crop. Last season, successive heatwaves in August impacted many farms, causing a late start and necessitating replanting to meet global market demand. This season, more favorable weather allowed us to begin cultivating and exporting our spring onions much earlier, making us the first Egyptian company to export high-quality spring onions to Europe year-round. Green bean production remained stable, thanks to year-round cultivation across various regions of Egypt. The top export varieties of spring onion are the Photon and Giza, which are prized for their excellent appearance, clean white bulb, and desirable length that meet European specifications. For green beans, the SV, SB, Paulista, and Sony varieties are the top performers."

On the demand front, the market is rewarding and shows promising prospects. Yassien: "Demand this season shows a stable, slight increase, supported by the absence of major weather disruptions in Egypt and the resulting top-quality produce of both spring onions and green beans. For Helwan, the European market has been a strong performer. The overall demand remains robust, driven by the need for counter-seasonal supply. Specifically, the UK market stands out as an area of exceptional success and growth for spring onions, alongside France and the Netherlands. For green beans, Italy has been the largest importer of Helwan Group beans, with strong demand continuing throughout the season following the end of their local cultivation. While we have no slower markets than usual, highly price-sensitive markets show less growth due to increased production costs this season."

Egypt faces strong competition from origins like Kenya, Morocco, and Senegal, particularly for green beans. "However, our competitive advantage is significant. Last year, we implemented a new strategy to provide a consistent, year-round supply of spring onions, a key market differentiator. Furthermore, Helwan Group operates its own farms, which ensures we maintain strict quality control from the very beginning. We monitor every stage from the selection of the right seedlings and soil preparation to irrigation and harvesting, allowing us to achieve a high-volume output of diverse produce. Our other edge is our emphasis on high-quality produce and farming practices, verified by certifications such as Global Gap, BRCGS, SMETA, along with other well-known certificates, which ensure our products are cultivated sustainably and safely, ready for the global market," Yassien concludes.
