Fennel and pumpkins - typical autumn produce

Although almost all products are now more or less available all year round, fennel and pumpkins are particularly linked with the autumn period. For the Fellini Patrizio company of Gambettola (Forlì-Cesena), fennel is one of the leading products. "This time of year, we produce fennel at Azienda Agricola 67, which is located close to us. This allows very little time to elapse from harvesting to packaging, to the benefit of quality," explains Gianluca Pollarini of the sales department.

"The market is responding well, with lively demand for fennel and decent prices. However, everything revolves around planning, which is very important at Fellini: together with the farmers, we decide on the areas many months in advance, thereby guaranteeing the collection of their production. It would be nice for the planning to work in the other direction as well, i.e., with the market."

Lettuce is also grown locally at Azienda Agricola 67 alongside celery, another high-volume reference. Just a few more weeks, and then production will come from other Italian regions, making the most of the production from the different areas.

Then there is the whole pumpkin segment: "We work with all types of pumpkins. The largest volumes are of butternut squash, followed by Muscat. Violina, Delica, and Okaido. Then there are those dedicated to ornamental use or carving, which we have enriched with colourful nets and themed stickers for children," explains Quality Manager Deborah Frani.

The commitment on the sustainability front does not stop. In this regard, the group is investing in new technologies for the digital transition and is making ESG investments related to the reduction of water consumption and CO2 emissions through Emilia Romagna PSR tenders.
