China to expand fruit & vegetable imports from Central Asia

China plans to expand imports of fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products from Central Asia, according to statements made following the second "Central Asia–China" summit held in Astana on June 17.

Speaking on behalf of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, spokesperson He Yadong confirmed the country's intention to deepen trade and economic ties with the region. Three multilateral and five bilateral agreements were signed during the summit, covering key areas of cooperation. Among the highlighted measures was a commitment to increase the number of China–Europe freight trains passing through Central Asia, further integrating the region into China's global trade network.

Beijing is placing particular emphasis on importing high-quality agricultural goods, including fresh produce, to help meet domestic demand. This move comes amid long-term demographic shifts in China. While the country is experiencing record-low birth rates, its population still exceeds 1.4 billion, driving sustained demand for a stable food supply.

The expanded import strategy also includes energy and mineral resources, but agricultural imports, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, are now considered a strategic priority.
