Del Monte Kenya has adopted smart agriculture to combat the effects of climate change while safeguarding productivity. Harsh weather conditions, including flooding and prolonged droughts, have highlighted the need for advanced water management. As a response, the company has upgraded irrigation systems, expanded dam capacity, and now relies on drip irrigation, which reduces water use by 40%.
Spanning 4,200 hectares, the plantation produces 200,000 metric tons of pineapples annually, using technology such as drone monitoring, satellite imagery, and precision irrigation to maintain year-round output. Each hectare is planted with 70,000 pineapple plants, requiring careful water and nutrient management over the 18-month growing cycle.
In addition to irrigation upgrades, the company recently launched a biofertilizer plant that converts pineapple waste into nutrient-rich fertilizers. This facility, a partnership with a biotechnological firm, supports sustainable farming and may offer cost-effective alternatives for smallholder farmers across East Africa.
Reforestation is another key initiative. Over 8,200 trees have been planted to restore riparian zones, improve biodiversity, and stabilize local climates. The company works with local partners and communities to protect vital ecosystems along rivers like the Thika and Athi.
Digital tools, including soil sensors and geospatial data, help optimize farming decisions. These technologies enable efficient pest control, irrigation, and fertilization, minimizing waste and environmental impact. Cover cropping and composting further enhance soil health and reduce dependency on chemical inputs.
Beyond the farm, the company significantly impacts the local economy. With 6,500 direct employees and many more indirectly supported, it supplies pineapples to domestic and international markets, including Europe and the Middle East. It also invests in community developmentābuilding schools, providing housing, maintaining infrastructure, and supporting healthcare and education.
