Zespri forecasts strong kiwifruit returns

Zespri has released its indicative June forecast for the 2025/26 season, reflecting a strong start to the year and narrowing the ranges from its initial March forecast. The outlook suggests continued growth in average per-hectare returns for Green, Sweet Green, Organic Green, and Organic SunGold kiwifruit, surpassing the record levels of the previous season.

According to CEO Jason Te Brake, the forecasted improvements are attributed to increased yields, better fruit sizing—particularly for Green and RubyRed varieties—and additional production from newly established SunGold and RubyRed orchards.

New Zealand is expected to produce more than 200 million trays of kiwifruit this season. Sales have begun positively, with demand reportedly strong in Europe and North America. However, the company acknowledges ongoing challenges in Asian markets, particularly inflationary pressures in Japan, which may influence pricing and demand.

To date, Zespri has shipped over 110 million trays of kiwifruit, more than half of the season's projected total. RubyRed sales have concluded, and Zespri's operational teams are focused on sustaining sales momentum and maintaining value across markets.

Zespri's corporate net profit after tax, including license revenue, is forecast to reach between NZD 248 million and NZD 258 million (US$151–157 million) for the 2025/26 season—an increase from NZD 155.2 million (US$95 million) the previous year.

Te Brake also noted progress on industry-wide strategic initiatives, including an increase in grower shareholding. Following recent share alignment efforts, more than 60% of growers are expected to hold shares in Zespri, up from 48%. This follows a 2024 grower vote in which 91% supported offshore expansion efforts.

The industry is currently developing its 2035 strategy, with a focus on aligning commercial interests and planning for long-term value creation. According to Zespri, aligning grower and shareholder interests will be central to future initiatives, particularly as demand for New Zealand kiwifruit remains strong in global markets.
