Intra-Asia Container Index - 15 May:

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index falls 7% to $656

Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) experienced a 7% decline in early May, falling to $656 per 40ft container, following two consecutive periods of growth. Despite this drop, the IACI remains 11% higher than in May 2024. Drewry anticipates that intra-Asia freight rates will continue to decline but remain within a stable range for the rest of the month.

The IACI is a weighted average of spot rates across 18 major trade routes in Asia, providing a comprehensive view of market conditions. This index is updated fortnightly and reflects actual spot container freight rates on key intra-Asia routes. The IACI is composed of 18 route-specific indices, each representing individual shipping routes, alongside a composite index. All indices are reported in U.S. dollars per 40ft container, ensuring consistency and transparency in rate tracking.

The routes included in the IACI cover a wide range of key trade connections across Asia. These include the routes from Busan to Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai, Jakarta to Shanghai, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Shanghai. Other major connections are Kaohsiung to Shanghai, Laem Chabang to Shanghai, and various routes originating from Shanghai to destinations such as Busan, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Jebel Ali, Kaohsiung, Laem Chabang, Manila, Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, Yokohama, and vice versa from Yokohama to Shanghai.
