China boosts cherry exports with 80,000 tons from Shaanxi

China is intensifying its initiatives to enhance cherry exports, aiming to penetrate markets traditionally led by countries like Chile and the U.S. The global cherry trade reached U.S. $ 9.17 billion in 2023, with China, Chile, and the U.S. being prominent contributors. Although China is a key importer, its export activities are gaining momentum.

In 2023, China exported cherries valued at U.S. $ 164,000, marking a more than threefold increase from 2022. These exports reached destinations such as the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Russia, and Thailand.

Chengcheng County in Shaanxi Province has emerged as a notable cherry-producing region. At a promotional event in Shanghai, officials from the area emphasized their goal to attract international buyers. Chengcheng produces 80,000 tons of cherries annually from 100,000 mu (66.67 square kilometers) of orchards, with the industry's value estimated at 3 billion yuan (U.S. $417 million). The county cultivates over 30 varieties, including Brooks, Meizao, and Russian No. 8.

"Our cherries meet the standards of consumers in Shanghai and beyond," stated Zhang Xianghui, deputy head of Chengcheng County. The region has developed cold storage facilities with a capacity of 200,000 tons and expanded processing capabilities for cherry wine, juice, and dried fruit.

Yang Jianwei, deputy director of the Shaanxi Fruit Industry Center, noted, "Chengcheng cherries are now reaching markets like Dubai. They are becoming a rising product in China's fruit export sector." This initiative mirrors broader efforts by Chinese fruit producers to enhance quality and infrastructure to satisfy export demands. Officials indicate that regions like Shaanxi are strategically positioned to bolster China's ambitions in global agricultural trade.
