It was with great sadness that T H Clements & Son Ltd. announced the passing of Alan Clements, a much-loved figure within the business and broader farming community. Alan passed away peacefully this weekend, surrounded by his family.
Born during World War II into a farming family, Alan followed in his father's footsteps before developing a passion for lorries and haulage. In 1966, he brought these two interests together by founding T H Clements & Son Ltd. With a small but dedicated team, Alan worked tirelessly to grow the business into what it is today.
Alan was known for his deep understanding of the business, often immersing himself in every part of operations—from seed selection and field planning to packing and transportation. He was rarely found behind a desk, preferring to be out in the fields or chatting with team members. His dedication to improvement and keen eye for detail helped drive innovation and efficiency across the company.
Despite his sharp business acumen, Alan ran the company with informality and openness. He welcomed conversation and ideas from all corners, and his presence alone was enough to spark a meaningful discussion, even if you hadn't planned on having one.
A natural trader, Alan was widely regarded for his negotiating skills and his relentless pursuit of the best deal. He was known for walking away from offers, only to receive a call days later accepting his terms. If someone needed help sourcing a vehicle or equipment, Alan was the person to turn to.
He was equally respected for his warmth and sense of humour. Whether talking about football (particularly Nottingham Forest), Formula 1, or golf, Alan was always ready for a good-natured debate or a laugh, often at his own expense. He was usually the first in the office and the last to leave, but outside of work, he valued time with his family, time on the golf course, and good company.
Alan's generosity, especially with his time, left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be remembered as a kind, passionate man who made a significant impact on both people and business.
Tributes poured in following the news of his passing, with many highlighting his legacy:
"A titan of the industry, glad that the family could be with him."
"Alan achieved a great deal in his lifetime, yet he always seemed to have time for a chat and always with a smile on his face."
"Alan was a lovely man, and he has left muddy footprints (in the best way) on the hearts of many people. He deservedly gained a lot of respect and love from those who met him, and who will remember him fondly."
Alan Clements leaves behind a remarkable legacy. He will be deeply missed by his family, colleagues, and the many who had the privilege of knowing him.
