VitaFresh Exports is starting the South African citrus export season. The company exports the whole range of citrus from lemons to grapefruit to oranges.
"Our biggest exports will be in lemons and oranges, but we export the whole range from South Africa and Zimbabwe. We have a reliable group of growers in these countries," said Daniela Ivanova from VitaFresh Exports.
"The lemon season has got off to a slow start in the north of the country. There has been a lot of rain, which caused a delay, and this caused a domino effect on the supply chain right through to the markets. A lot of the early fruit is not suitable for the European market due to black spot. Europe has a big demand at the moment as there have been very few arrivals so far".
VitaFresh Exports supplies citrus to the UK, EU, Asia, and the Far and Middle East as well as the US, Canada, and India.
"At the moment, we have a few containers of lemons en route to the UK, and we plan to increase the volumes next week when the Eastern Cape starts the harvest. We have also started shipping Ruby Star grapefruit to the UK and EU this week. Also, in April, satsumas will start, followed by soft citrus. At the end of May, we start with Valencias, then in June we will have the later varieties of soft citrus and the Midknight oranges."
