Severe frost impact on Turkish apricots, cherries, grapes, peaches, walnuts and potentially citrus

The damages to orchards cultivating a wide variety of fruits that the freezing weather has caused in Türkiye are on a level that has not been seen before, says Akin Soyleyen, marketing manager for Turkish fresh produce exporter Aksun: "Recent severe frosts across Türkiye have caused unprecedented damage to the country's agriculture, significantly impacting the outlook for the upcoming stone fruit season, as well as several other crops. Reports indicate widespread losses affecting key fruit-growing regions, notably apricots in Malatya and cherries in Isparta, although the damage is extensive across numerous provinces and crops, including grapes, peaches, walnuts, and potentially citrus for the subsequent seasons. The scale of this frost event surpasses recent historical precedents."

It's clear that some of the growers and exporters might need some form of support to get through this significant challenge. According to Soyleyen, the Turkish Government is currently trying to find out what the current situation is like, exactly. "Government authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage, which is expected to take several weeks, and are evaluating potential aid measures for growers and interventions to mitigate extreme price volatility in the domestic market."

Although it's currently uncertain what the full effects of these damages will be, Soyleyen is sure this will impact the supply for several fruits in the next few months: "For Aksun, this situation presents potential shifts in supply dynamics. We are actively monitoring the situation, including government responses and policy developments, and are developing strategies to navigate these challenging conditions and meet seasonal demand where possible."
