Meghalaya shiitake farmers partner with Japan's YATS for market expansion

On February 14, Hill Farmers' Shiitake Mushroom Co-op Soc. Ltd. of Meghalaya and YATS Corporation of Japan formalized a collaborative agreement. This partnership targets market-linkage development and a supply chain for Shiitake mushroom cultivation in Meghalaya.

The agreement was signed at Shillong Club by Yasuhide Ito, President of YATS Corporation, and Alfondbirth Kharsyntiew, General Secretary of the Hill Farmers' Shiitake Mushroom Co-op. Soc. Ltd. Kharsyntiew noted, "This collaboration with YATS Corporation of Japan represents a significant step towards transforming the Shiitake mushroom industry in Meghalaya. We are confident that this partnership will bring about positive changes for our farmers and the entire region." He acknowledged the Government of Meghalaya and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare for their support.

The Hill Farmers' Shiitake Mushroom Co-op Soc. Ltd., the Government of Meghalaya, and YATS Corporation initially entered into a tripartite agreement in 2019, aiming to develop a Shiitake mushroom ecosystem. This agreement focuses on sustainable income generation, market-linkage development, supply chain enhancement, and technological advancements.

Sustainable income generation is a core goal, aiming to provide long-term economic benefits for farmers. Market-linkage development seeks to connect local farmers to global markets, enhancing economic stability. Supply chain enhancement will ensure timely and quality delivery of Shiitake mushrooms internationally. Technological advancements involve transferring agricultural technologies and practices from Japan to Meghalaya and optimizing cultivation processes. The Government of Meghalaya will support it with infrastructure, policy, and regulatory framework.
