"Customers want at least twice the amount of product"

Strong demand for strawberries across all distribution channels

Strawberries, especially those from Basilicata, Italy's main specialized growing region, are attracting exceptional interest. Operators have confirmed a strong demand from all sales channels.

Giovanni Passarelli (pictured above), owner of the firm of the same name in Scanzano Jonico (Matera), which cultivates 8 hectares of Sabrosa-Candonga, explains: "Everyone is looking for strawberries, with important and constant deliveries. We are at the beginning of a very promising season. It is undoubtedly a delayed campaign compared to the others, but the quality of the fruit that is starting to arrive on the markets is always the same, to the extent that the production areas are very different. The crops look great, with plenty of ripe fruit on the plants, green strawberries and lots of flowers. Buyers are trying to find strawberries everywhere: even a few extra parcels could make a difference. Things are about to get busy in Basilicata."

Currently, the young entrepreneur harvests twice a week. "The quantities available are still limited. We have started with market stands in Milan, Brescia and Novara, which are the first three or four Italian customers. We are reserving about 50 plots for each customer, but they are looking for at least twice as many. In the next week or so, we plan to secure some more quantities. In the near future we will also start with market stands in Turin, Treviso, Genoa, Verona and Florence. The prices vary according to the market, but the current selling prices are not less than 7.50 €/kg."
