The onion market is rather sluggish in Europe at the moment. This is due to a number of factors, including relatively large stocks in several producer countries. "Generally speaking, there are still a lot of stocks of very mixed quality throughout Europe," explains Patrick Flin, manager of Paris Ail. "We still have some poor-quality products, the result of the bad weather last summer and autumn, which had a direct impact on the preservation of the onions. However, the products we have in stock for sale in the spring should be of much better quality."
There are large stocks, which have been difficult to sell due to low levels of consumption. "Sales are very sluggish, and prices have been very low since December. Although exports were dynamic towards the end of the year, the Netherlands did not raise its prices. This decision was certainly motivated by the fact that their stocks were still very high. Today, their prices are still decreasing. The situation is not great in Spain either, with really low prices for the season."
This sluggish market could regain some momentum in early March with the start of Ramadan.
