The demand for efficient logistics for temperature-sensitive cargo continues to grow, driven by increasing global trade in fresh fruits, proteins, and pharmaceutical products. In response, Maersk has expanded its cold storage infrastructure by establishing a new facility in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This addition is part of the company's broader network of specialized warehouses designed to support end-to-end logistics for perishable goods.
Less than 1.5 years after construction began, Maersk has now received its first shipment at the Rotterdam cold store. The initial cargo consisted of fresh grapes from South African exporter Grape Alliance. The facility is intended to enhance the speed and reliability of refrigerated supply chains, ensuring improved quality for temperature-sensitive and frozen products as they reach European markets.
The cold store spans 35,000 square meters and is strategically located near the Maasvlakte II terminal, operated by APM Terminals. This location allows for direct handling of refrigerated containers, streamlining logistics and reducing delays. The facility has a storage capacity of more than 34,000 pallet positions, making it a key hub for refrigerated logistics in North-West Europe, serving industries such as pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, meat, and seafood. Additionally, the adjacent Star Depot enables the return of empty refrigerated containers, minimizing extra costs associated with delays and storage.
Further insights into the new Rotterdam facility, including a 3D model and virtual reality tours, will be available at the upcoming Fruit Logistica trade fair in Berlin from February 5-7, 2025.
