Growth linked to "strong demand from manufacturers and exports"

French potato production is up by 12.2%

With 7.7 million tons for the 2024/2025 campaign, French potato production is up by 12.2%. In a joint press release, UNPT and CNIPT note that this increase is linked to "growing demand."

The 2024 harvest is in line with the ten-year average
"The 2024 production campaign marks an important milestone for the French potato sector. With a significant 11% increase in the area devoted to ware potatoes, reaching 178,900 hectares according to the latest Agreste figures, the initial results show that production continues to grow despite the climatic challenges of a particularly wet and trying season for producers. After a year of catastrophic yields in 2022 and a significant rebound in 2023, the 2024 harvest is in line with the ten-year average, reaching a gross yield of 43.1 t/ha nationally, and 44.5 t/ha in the UNPT/CNIPT panel areas (Picardy, Nord Pas-de-Calais, Champagne-Ardenne, Centre, Haute-Normandie)."

Growth driven by strong demand from manufacturers and neighboring countries
However, this 2024 harvest highlights "the persistent inability to return to the yield levels achieved ten years ago. This stagnation raises crucial questions about the future of yields in the medium and long term and its direct consequences for national production. Total French production is forecast at 7,711,209 tons, up by 12.2% from the previous year. This increase is mainly due to the increase in cultivated areas, supported by strong growth in industrial demand. Added to this is the increased demand from certain neighboring countries, which are facing growing difficulties with their own production."
