Mongolia launches lab to produce virus-free potato microtubers for seed enhancement

The Laboratory for Propagating Virus-Free Potato Microtubers has commenced operations under the aegis of the Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry of Mongolia. This facility, which recently initiated the transplantation of its inaugural batch of microplants derived from super-elite seeds into an aeroponic setup, is poised to play a central role in bolstering the domestic production of super-elite seed potatoes. The establishment of this model farm, funded by the State Budget, is aimed at ensuring the availability of high-quality seeds for seed-breeding enterprises across the nation.

For the current year, the Research and Development Center has set a target of producing 10,000 virus-free potato microtubers and 2,000 mother plants. This output is projected to fulfill 20 percent of Mongolia's requirement for super-elite seed tubers. This initiative is part of the broader "Food Revolution" National Movement, which emphasizes the utilization and protection of plant genetic resources, the augmentation of seed reserves for locally adapted varieties, and the development of a comprehensive seed production system encompassing grains, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, berries, and other beneficial crops.
