Andrés Rodríguez, Chile's agricultural attaché in the United States:

"We think this will be a very good season for Chilean fruit exports to the US"

"We think this will be a very good season for Chilean fruit exports to the US. The weather conditions in Chile have been good. In addition, there have been major changes in the export of table grapes, following the publication of the Systems Approach after 24 years of negotiations. This will have an important impact on the attractiveness of Chile as an origin in the United States," stated Andrés Rodríguez, Chile's agricultural attaché in the United States. "Furthermore, Chile has been making strong progress in the production of new varieties, which are also those required by the United States. Cherry exports will continue to increase. We expect a high production increase this season and the industry is investing more in promoting this product in the United States."

According to Rodríguez, 35% of the table grape production is eligible to be sent under the Systems Approach, but as it is the first year, the percentage could be lower. "This fruit has the potential to become more attractive in the United States in terms of importer demand thanks to the product's high quality and condition," he said.

"If we want to boost exports to the US, we must continue to evolve table grape exports under the Systems Approach by increasing the options of areas eligible for this system and having other treatment options, such as irradiation, and other new fumigants such as ethyl formate. We must also grow new table grape varieties and continue to boost cherry exports, which have already experienced high growth."
