Last week, discussions between HAGL Group's chairman, Doan Nguyen Duc, and the Gia Lai People's Committee focused on enhancing transport connections between Vietnam and Laos. This initiative aims to facilitate the export of agricultural produce, notably from HAGL's extensive banana and durian plantations spanning 7,000 hectares across both countries. Duc highlighted the imminent commencement of durian harvests from a portion of the company's 2,300-hectare cultivation area, emphasizing the strategic timing for capitalizing on market opportunities, particularly in China.
Meanwhile, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, through its secretary general Dang Phuc Nguyen, pointed out the burgeoning export potential for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, underscored by the remarkable performance of durian exports. With an anticipated export value exceeding $3.2 billion for durian alone, Vietnam is positioning itself as a key player in international markets, especially in China, which accounts for the majority of its durian export volume. The association also foresees the expansion of passion fruit and lychee exports to the U.S. and South Korean markets, respectively, reinforcing the optimistic outlook for the sector.
The achievements in the fruit and vegetable export sector are further evidenced by the significant growth in 2024, with export revenue reaching $7.12 billion. This success is attributed to the diverse range of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables gaining traction in over 60 international markets. The strategic export of fresh coconuts to China and the negotiation for passion fruit exports to Australia exemplify Vietnam's proactive approach to expanding its agricultural export footprint.
Government agencies, including the Plant Protection Department, have played a pivotal role in aligning Vietnamese agricultural practices with international standards and facilitating market access and compliance. This collaborative effort between state management agencies and producers is crucial for sustaining and expanding Vietnam's presence in global agricultural markets.
As the industry looks forward to 2025, the concerted efforts of exporters, producers, and regulatory bodies are set to further elevate Vietnam's agricultural export sector, leveraging both the quality and diversity of its produce to meet the growing global demand.
