BASF-Nunhems presented 5 new varieties at SIVAL this year. These new varieties include the Rapton leek, which "can be peeled more easily and more quickly, saving up to 11% of preparation time," according to Barbara Jodeau, the company's communications and marketing manager. Another seasonal vegetable is the Durance carrot, which "has a very long shelf life". Arlon lamb's lettuce has the advantage of offering a wide harvesting window, while Glorioso onions provide "excellent uniformity of size."
In the fruit department, the innovation is the Melvel melon, a late-season variety that harvests very well. "The problems we encounter at the end of the melon season mainly concern the reduction in light levels. This can make harvesting difficult, as it is based on coloring criteria and the stalk forming a ring. This new variety has the advantage of being more colorful and easier to circle, which makes harvesting easier. It also takes on sugar earlier, which can compensate for a potential lack of sunshine at the end of the season," explains Jérôme Pomes, melon sales manager of BASF-Nunhems.
"Although late melon varieties do not represent the largest volume in a campaign, they are important because they close the season. Melvel melons make it possible to end the campaign on a positive note, until the beginning of the next season."
