Russia's fruit and vegetable imports rise in 2024, with Turkey as key supplier

Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision reports a notable uptick in vegetable and fruit imports in 2024. Vegetable imports surged by 9.9 percent to 1.7 million tons, and fruit imports increased by 2.4 percent, reaching 6.1 million tons. This growth underscores a sustained appetite for foreign produce, especially from nations with favorable trade ties with Russia.

The escalation in vegetable imports underscores an augmented dependency on external suppliers to satisfy local demand, aligning with Russia's strategy to enhance trade with diplomatically and economically aligned countries. This approach has facilitated a broadening in the variety of food imports entering Russia.

Furthermore, Russia experienced a 3.9 percent increase in imports of specific fruits like peaches, plums, and cherries, totaling 722,600 tons, with Turkey being the predominant source. This rise illustrates the Russian market's continued pursuit of diverse fresh produce options amidst economic and political adversities.

These statistics reflect the critical role of international trade in maintaining Russia's food supply stability, as the nation navigates through domestic production challenges and fortifies ties with key trading partners.
