Two new AREFLH members: SPPIOPO (Poland) and AOP Europe (Italy)

The Assembly of Fruit, Vegetable, and Horticultural Regions (AREFLH) has announced the addition of two new members. AOP Europae, an Italian PDO, has joined the College of Producers, while SPPIOPO, the Polish association of greenhouse tomato and cucumber growers, has become part of the College of Associate Members (experts).

With these new members, AREFLH now represents an even broader European presence, covering 14 countries: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.


AREFLH currently includes 17 regions, 30 POs and PDOs, 11 experts, and members across 14 countries.

About SPPIOPO (Poland)
SPPIOPO, the Polish Greenhouse Tomato and Cucumber Association (Stowarzyszenie Producentów Pomidorów i Ogórków pod Osłonami), represents 60% of Poland's production of these vegetables.

Key figures from the sector highlight the importance of greenhouse cultivation in Poland:

  • Share of production: Tomatoes and cucumbers grown under cover account for approximately 80% of the country's cultivation of these crops.
  • Employment: In 2023, the greenhouse tomato sector employed between 10,000 and 12,000 people, while cucumber production employed between 8,000 and 10,000 people.
  • Cultivation area: Poland's total greenhouse area for tomatoes and cucumbers exceeds 1,400 hectares.
  • Consumption: Poles consume an average of 10 kg of tomatoes annually.

About AOP Europe (Italy)
AOP Europae, based in the Campania region of Italy, is a PDO that unites 13 producer organizations. Its members operate across various areas of Italy, producing a diverse range of crops, including:

  • Fresh produce: Table grapes, cherries, apricots, peaches, figs, tomatoes, and fennel.
  • Specialty products: Costa d'Amalfi lemons (PGI), Etna prickly pears (PDO), Red Oranges (PGI), and Giffoni hazelnuts (PGI).
  • Vegetables: Processing tomatoes, onions, cauliflower, and Jerusalem artichokes.
  • AOP Europae's structure is designed to strengthen its members' capabilities, streamline costs, and improve market positioning. Key initiatives include:
  • Developing promotional plans to enhance the value of its products.
  • Supporting research projects to drive technological and scientific innovation.
  • Facilitating access to national and international funding programs.

Through its efforts, AOP Europae continues to amplify opportunities for growth and development across its network of producers.
