Rains beneficial to orange production in the interior of São Paulo

The rains at the beginning of October in the interior of São Paulo contributed to the development of oranges for the 2023/24 harvest, that was affected by a period of drought months earlier. With international prices on the rise and greater industry demand for the fruit, the crop is still at risk in the current season with potential repercussions on the 2024/25 harvest if El Niño causes storms and hailstorms in the region during the next months.

In October, there was a 6.3% drop in the volume of oranges offered in the São Paulo citrus belt compared to September. Prices, in turn, were quoted at R$2.49 per kilo in October, an increase of 7.81%. There was also greater demand for papaya in October, contributing to a 12.64% increase in the average price of the fruit in the eleven Supply Centers monitored by Conab.
