Special white corn variety back on the shelves

Over 10,000 variations of corn were tasted during a time frame of 22 years before George Crookham and Bruce Hobdey were happy with the results. Their variety is called Amaize™, an all-white, non-GMO sweet corn variety that was bred through traditional methods of hybridization. “Amaize has a distinct pop, crunch, and real corn flavor,” says George Crookham, CEO of Crookham Company, seed breeder of Amaize. “That’s how we differentiate from other corn varieties on the market.”

Amaize is a very versatile variety of corn in that it can be grown nationwide in any climate. The largest growing states are Florida, Georgia, Minnesota and New York. The brand’s retail partners work with local growers and as a result, Amaize corn in each store is local to the region where it’s sold. The corn variety is available at select retailers across the United States. “From Raley’s in California to Lunds and Byerlys in Minnesota to Tops in New York. “The marketplace for sweet corn is fairly scattered, with a lot of corn being grown locally. It is our goal to become a nationwide brand,” Crookham said.

This year marks the 10th year of Amaize and in the past decade, consistency of volume has improved. In addition, interest from consumers has grown. “Positive consumer feedback on our website and social media has certainly driven popularity. People love Amaize and year-round we are being asked when it’s available in stores. Due to its seasonal nature, availability is limited to summertime, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Some consumers freeze Amaize corn to get them through the off-season and enjoy it all year round.” Amaize sweet corn is available in a 4 ct. tray pack as well as bulk.

Many years of research have gone into the development of this premium sweet corn variety. “Although it is an exceptional variety, it is competitively priced in the market. In the past ten years, many retail partners have replaced their previous go-to sweet corn varieties with Amaize and exclusively offer this white sweet corn variety during the summer months.”

Rebrand
Recently, Amaize went through a rebranding. The logo has been updated as well as the packaging, signage materials and social media pages. The new logo with a more modern and cleaner look was designed to differentiate from other corn logos and branding in the marketplace. “It will help Amaize stand out on retail shelves.” The website will be updated next year.
