Hortyfruta: "One of the products affected by this issue is cucumber"

Producers alert about the mismatches between supply and demand at the end of the campaign in Almeria

The member associations of Hortyfruta, Andalusia's Fruit and Vegetable Inter-branch Organization, have put the spotlight on the complex end of this greenhouse horticultural campaign in Andalusia.

"At present, there is an anomalous situation caused to some extent by the serious mismatches there are between supply and demand. This complicated scenario may be partly due to weather issues, as the weather conditions in May were very atypical and excessively changing, leading to production clusters and ups and downs in supply and demand."

"One of the products that is being heavily affected is cucumber. Under normal circumstances, the Spanish and French cucumber in week 22 (from May 29 to June 4) would be traded at around 0.30 cents per kilo. This year, however, the Spanish cucumber is being traded at €0.12 per kilo and the French product at €0.16, which isn't enough to compensate for production costs."

"To date, nearly 96% of this campaign's cucumber has been marketed, and Almeria has marketed 5% less cucumber. The remaining 4% of the total will be marketed until the end of the campaign, less than half of which corresponds to French and Spanish cucumber."

"This situation seems to have been replicated in the rest of the products, as is the case for melons and, to a lesser extent, watermelons."

"This is of great concern to the members of Hortyfruta, who are sensitive to the situation of fruit and vegetable producers in Andalusia as they are the basis of the food chain. That's why Hortyfruta is already working on the introduction of improvements in the extension of the norm to be able to act in situations as dramatic as those registered at the end of this campaign."
