Large volumes of mangoes, that are currently being sold in the city and outskirts, are from the Rajarhat-Bhangor belt on the eastern fringes of the city, according to fruit traders and vendors. Among the varieties being produced in this belt are himsagar, langra, and amrapali. The mangoes, which are being sold at as low as Rs 30 per kg, are not from Malda or Murshidabad, the districts where the fruit is traditionally farmed in large quantities.
Farmers in Rajarhat and Bhangor have produced a large variety of fruits, including mango and jackfruit. Local administration supported farmers to adopt scientific farming techniques which helped crops. Bhangor BDO Debdipyaman Majumder said grafting of existing mango trees with new high-yield varieties had led to a bumper crop. Proximity to Kolkata meant a ready market which fruits can reach without much damage during transportation.
