Domestic supplies of blackberries around the corner

At the moment, there are good volumes of blackberries in the marketplace. “Supplies are about the same for blackberries as this time last year--there are no major changes in volume,” said Katiana Valdes, marketing director for Crystal Valley Foods.

While many different types of commodities across the U.S. and Canada are experiencing late starts to their seasons, blackberries look to be on time. “Currently, Crystal Valley is sourcing from Mexico, Guatemala and Georgia,” says Valdes. “The Mexican blackberry season is expected to end in about two weeks and the Georgia season is just getting started. California and North Carolina will start their seasons in mid-June.”

Blackberry demand
Currently, demand is light for blackberries. In general, though, the summer is a time when berry demand overall is good so demand is anticipated to stay steady. At the same time, in the U.S., the consumption rate for fruit over the past several years has increased thanks to the newer, sweeter varieties that have been developed for the fresh market.

Looking ahead for blackberries, Guatemala will continue its production with steady volume, weather permitting. “We expect both good volume and quality from Georgia as well,” adds Valdes.
