Filipino senator Cynthia Villar has promised to push for the development and promotion of the country's mango industry. The Senate Agriculture and Food Committee chairperson stated: "But the industry is faced with declining yield and quality attributed to pests and diseases, poor nutrient and water management, low adoption of improved technologies, and high post-harvest losses.”
She added that other industry problems include difficulty in farm operations, and high cost of production due to inefficient pesticide application.
The Philippines ranks 10th among the top producers of mango in the world with a 2.5-percent share in production. It is also the third most important fruit, based on export volume, in the Philippines, after bananas and pineapples.
