Prospect of exporting Tk 2 blns worth of mangoes from Rajshahi region

Exports of mangoes worth around Taka 2 bln from Bangladesh’ Rajshahi region, including its vast Barind tract, during the current season. Both the acreage and the yearly yield of the delicious fruit have been rising gradually for the last couple of years.

According to Shamsul Wadud, Additional Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), mango orchards have doubled in the region with a gap of only a decade. Around 970,000 tons of mangoes, valued at around Taka 8.5 bln, are expected to be produced from 91,850 hectares of land in the region consisting of Rajshahi, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj and Natore districts this year. As such, mango growers and exporters in the district are eyeing bigger shipments this year compared to the previous year.
