Taiwan Food and Drug Administration

Opposition legislators warns against easing ban on pesticides used on Japanese strawberries

Yesterday, opposition Kuomintang legislators urged Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) not to ease a ban on residues of two types of pesticides commonly used to treat Japanese strawberries.

The lawmakers, led by KMT legislative caucus whip Tseng Ming-chung, made the appeal at a press conference in response to FDA Director-General Wu Show-mei's announcement last week that the agency would consider setting maximum residue limits for the two pesticides, chlorfenapyr and flonicamid, in the place of the current ban.

In his remarks, Tseng said it was absurd for the government to consider allowing residues of pesticides on imported strawberries that are not authorized for use by domestic growers and potentially pose a risk to consumers' health.
