Llombart Handels- und Treuhandgesellschaft on the stone fruit season

"We started the season for nectarines and peaches with 500-gr trays, but sales are still very slow"

"This year there were no significant failures regarding stone fruit, so we expect a relatively normal harvest. It is also a good year for the peels, as the fruits tend to be smaller. More rain is needed for the fruits to grow larger," the Llombart company informs us. "We have started the season for nectarines and peaches with 500-gr trays, but sales are still very slow. However, we expect that from mid-May the available quantities will increase and then sales will pick up accordingly with hopefully better and warmer weather." Furthermore, he said, demand for flat peaches has increased significantly over traditional peach varieties.

Exclusive partner of the brand 'Royal' on the wholesale markets.
"We supply our goods mainly to food retailers. Among other things, we sell the stone fruit brand 'Royal' exclusively at German wholesale markets nationwide, as well as our own brands: 'Klein aber Fein' and 'Sonnenkinder'." He said that for laid produce with a quantity of 6.5 to 7 kg, retailers predominantly prefer yellow-fleshed produce. In addition, he said, in the case of packed goods, trays of 500 gr and 1 kg are in particular demand, while 6.5 kg and 7 kg can be found in the case of single-layer laid goods.

"To further boost sales, we need to offer attractive prices in line with the market. However, whether we can guarantee producers the prices they want this year remains to be seen. Too many factors depend on that, such as sizes, weather, etc." In addition, he said, the problem is being felt throughout production. "There is unfortunately a serious shortage of personnel, both for work in the field and in the packing houses. Furthermore, the problem with the lack of water is increasing. Without enough water, it becomes difficult to produce appropriate calibers."

In some parts of Spain, he said, water levels are so low that it is only enough to irrigate the trees enough for them to survive, let alone to sustain production. "In other regions, drip irrigation is predominant, which is enough to produce produce produce, but not enough to produce enough thick fruit. Here, at the end of the day, it also depends on the results that the producers achieve. It remains to be seen whether the efforts are worth it or not."
