Robbert de Mie, Vegimex

"Besides Dumara watermelons, this year also Piel de Sapo and yellow melons from Morocco"

The export ban imposed by Moroccan authorities brought the tomato season to an early end at Vegimex in the Netherlands. "That's very unfortunate because we had a nice season with good prices for loose tomatoes," says Robbert de Mie. "The Moroccan bell pepper season has ended too. We're already focusing on the new vegetable season, in which we want to conclude even more contracts."

Meanwhile, the first Dumara watermelons have arrived from the best-known watermelon region in Morocco, Zagora. "This year, there's strict acreage regulation due to the water shortage. We're, therefore, expecting significantly fewer watermelons from that country. We'll, thus, also get yellow melons and Piel de Sapo from Morocco. The first Piel de Sapo melons are arriving this week, in bins, just like the watermelons," continues Robbert.

Vegimex kicked the season off last month with the first Mauritanian watermelons. "That supply was significantly higher this year and Ramadan ensured good sales. There are still a few of those watermelons on the market, but that quality is declining, making people willing to pay slightly more for good Moroccan melons."

"The Dumara watermelon prices are good, although they're falling somewhat. The upcoming weeks' sales depend largely on the weather. As soon as the sun comes out, sales skyrocket," Robbert explains. Vegimex sells mainly to wholesalers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Scandinavia, and Germany. "We're looking forward to a good season," he concludes.
