US: Publix net earnings surge more than 100% in Q1
Employee-owned Publix Super Markets generated strong sales, as well as a significant increase in net earnings, during its first quarter. Sales for the three months ended April 1 totaled $14.3bln, a 13.5% increase from $13.2bln during the year-ago period. Publix' same-store sales for the quarter jumped 6.4%, Publix reported. Net earnings were $1.2bln during the first quarter, a 100.8% jump from $618mln during the same period in 2022.

US: Aldi plans to open 120 stores in 2023
Aldi plans to open 120 new stores in the U.S. during 2023 and is working to have more than 2,400 locations across the country by the end of the year, the German grocer announced. The discount food retailer said it added 35 stores during the first quarter of 2023, noting that those openings attracted 5.3mln new customers as of last month. Aldi’s growth trajectory in 2023 builds on the grocer’s rapid expansion in 2022 during which it added and remodeled 139 U.S. locations against a backdrop of high inflation.

Walmart opens $50M distribution centre in Atlantic Canada
Walmart has opened its first distribution centre in Atlantic Canada - a $50mln facility in Moncton, New Brunswick. The 223,000 square foot operation will distribute fresh and frozen groceries to more than 40 Walmart stores in the region.
