Sustainability - how agrivoltaic systems can be combined with greenhouses

Climate change, the necessary rationalization of renewable sources and, in general, a greater awareness of environmental issues are leading agriculture towards increasingly sustainable choices. For these reasons, the EU has prepared strategies - identified as the Green Deal - with the objective of mitigating the impact of humans on climate.

Starting from this, over the past few years Med Group (Gruppo Europrogress) has strengthened its range in favor of renewables, studying and developing structures that support photovoltaic systems. FreshPlaza has talked about it with Ester Occhipinti, sales manager of the company located in Vittoria, Sicily.

Asymmetric double-pitch Multisunart 9600 installed in Sicily

"Agrivoltaic systems represent a combination of agriculture and the production of renewable energy. They integrate greenhouses with photovoltaic modules to produce sustainable electricity. Based on EU directives and market demand, we are now able to provide agricultural businesses with the possibility of taking advantage of agrivoltaic systems. Our advanced know-how puts us in the conditions to develop customized projects and greenhouses compliant with current regulations."

"We are talking about materials that last longer, such as hot-galvanized profiles and covers and side materials compatible with the various needs of each crop - these are the main characteristics of our Multisunart greenhouses. They are specific structures for agrivoltaic systems, available both with single or double-pitches. The surface destined to photovoltaic panels is larger in single-pitch structures. Starting from an eave height of 2-2.5 meters and based on the inclination necessary to obtain the best output (25°C on average), it is possible to reach a top height of 5.5-6 meters. In double-pitch structures, the surface of the panels can vary based on the type chosen, as both symmetric and asymmetric options can be chosen."

"In both cases, various widths are available and there are many customization options. Covers can be made of various types of materials, including plastic films, polycarbonates or sandwich panels. In double-pitch structures, ventilation can be guaranteed via top openings on north-facing pitches or via manual or motorized perimeter windows."
