Kutch district in Gujarat is becoming a hub dragon fruit production, thanks to the conducive environment and progressive farmers there. The district produced about 2,000 tons of dragon fruit last year and the cultivation area for the fruit in the current season is about 500 hectares.
The cultivation area in the district is about 60% of that in Gujarat and 20% of that in India. According to the horticulture department, the total cultivation area for dragon fruit was about 90 hectares in in 2018-19 and it increased to 200 hectares in 2021-22. The flowering for this fruit starts in May and it gives fruit during the monsoon till the last rainfall is received.
According to a recent statement released by the ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare, the import of Kamalam in India started during 2017 with a quantity of 327 tons, which increased to 9,162 tons in 2019. The import is increasing because the demand is increasing in urban India and the yearly import is to the tune of Rs 1 bln (€12 mln).
