Intending to cut freight costs and travel times

Proposed shipping service from Apollo Bay to King Island

For inhabitants of King Island - between Tasmania and Victoria in the Bass Strait – it is a constant battle to get goods and fresh produce in a timely manner. Now, a proposal for a new shipping service, connecting the island to Apollo Bay in Victoria's south west, could be a solution. Bass Strait Freight operates a service between Tasmania and Flinders Island, but managing director David Harris is investigating expanding to King with a roll-on roll-off vessel.

It would be in competition with the Bass Island Line, run from Devonport by government-owned TasPorts, and Eastern Line Shipping, which deals out of Stanley, mainly in livestock.
