Hainan Province is an important production area for wax apples in China. In addition to the traditional varieties of Black King Kong, Black Pearl, and Milk wax apple, the Sanya production area in Hainan has successfully and independently developed a new variety of Nanlu Number 1 wax apple, and mass production has been achieved in recent years. In the first ten days of March this year, this variety was exported abroad for the first time and arrived in Canada by air. The current export volume of Sanya wax apple is 150 boxes per week, and three batches have been sent out so far. The export season will last until July, which is the end of the Sanya wax apple production season.
The exported "Nanlu No. 1" wax apple is cultivated on the same basis of Black King Kong and Milk wax apples. "Nanlu No. 1 wax apple is bigger, with a single fruit weighing about 150 grams, which is about twice that of the Black King Kong wax apple. It has both the acidity and sweetness of the Milk wax apple and the shape of Black King Kong, without astringency in the mouth. As the peel is thicker than Black King Kong, it is more durable to store. These characteristics of the variety have turned out to be a competitive advantage, and currently only China produces this variety," Jin Jie, the person in charge of Hainan Guoyuan E-Commerce Co., Ltd., told FreshPlaza.
"Most wax apples in the international market are produced in Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan. Currently, the price of Sanya wax apple in Canada is about US$60 per box, which is 20% higher than traditional varieties. The market response is satisfactory." Ms. Jin said that she is currently negotiating with a supermarket in Dubai and plans to open up more foreign markets for Sanya wax apples.
"In the domestic market, Nanlu No. 1 wax apple has been gradually recognized by the market in recent years. Due to the small production volume, domestic sales are in short supply, and the price is higher than traditional varieties. The production volume is ideal this year, twice that of last year, and the price is slightly higher than last year. The production season of this variety begins in November, and the mass production season is from March to July."
According to reports, Hainan fruits, which are currently in season, include golden pineapple, banana, and king lychee. In addition, Sanya longan and Guifei mango are being exported one after another.
