Seven years from now, all European Union countries must have reached their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here, the European Green Deal plays a central role. "Urgent action is needed. CO2 emissions must be reduced by 55% by 2030 and completely by 2050," says Bob Ijpelaar, Newwen's managing director. This Dutch company, part of the Container Systems Group, specializes in logistics load carriers, supply chain management, and sustainable packaging solutions. "In the context of these goals and an energy-neutral climate, we've developed reusable, traceable, circular packaging."

Besides the fruit and vegetable sector, the company also provides solutions to the construction, home delivery, and horticultural sectors. "However, the fruit and vegetable sector is a crucial market for us. A lot is transported, and sustainability targets hang like a dark cloud above that sector. We want to work with those businesses to find their perfect export packaging. Each has its challenges, so we want to discuss how our solutions can best help them. So far, we've had very positive results, both functionally and economically."
The package, made from polypropylene plastic, features a linked Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), bar code, and QR code label for tracking and recording things like movements, locations, temperature, and humidity. "That can be linked to the company's ERP system, providing greater insight and optimizing internal and external logistics processes. Along with this label, we offer many other customized IoT applications," continues Bob.
"From design to production, we take everything off our customers' hands. That includes size, weight, strength, and handling and mechanization suitability. The packaging is moisture-resistant, antibacterial, and antistatic too, and can offer UV protection. Plus, it can fold completely flat, saving space during storage and transportation, which helps reduce CO2 emissions. The material is fully recyclable. Nothing we produce is single-use."
"The new EU legislation is a bit of a shock for many in the sector, and big steps must be taken. A zero-waste packaging approach helps considerably reduce emissions so people can focus on their daily activities. We hope to help many in this regard," Bob concludes.
