Rick Verhoeckx, Verhoeckx & Zn:

"Mushroom market stable after price hike; chestnut mushrooms pricey due to cultivation issues"

"After a considerable price hike, mushroom prices have stabilized. That increase was also most welcome, given all the high costs. Something has to give at some point. Fortunately, the market's better balanced now," says Rick Verhoeckx of the Dutch mushroom and top fruit wholesaler of the same name.

"Mushroom demand is good at the moment. Easter is coming, and that and Christmas are always peak times, with sales climbing 50%. That applies to the entire assortment."

"But especially to specialties like Portabella," Rick explains. Verhoeckx & Zn mainly usually supply mushrooms to Norwegian and Dutch buyers.

"Standard white mushrooms are currently selling for usual prices. However, due to cultivation problems, chestnut mushrooms have been very expensive. These mushrooms opened earlier, so they had to be picked earlier. That doesn't affect their quality, but you do get fewer kgs," Rick concludes.
