Red-flesh honey pomelo is more popular in overseas markets

Similar to previous years, the new harvest of Pinghe honey pomelos was picked in October, and exports started accordingly. At this stage, the export season of Pinghe honey pomelo is in its peak season. Compared with the same period last year, this year's exports are relatively stable.

"On the one hand, this is because the overall quality of the fruit is better this year. On the other hand, with the gradual relaxation of the pandemic policy and the continuous decline in international logistics costs, the related export costs have decreased," Mr. Lai Xianghuo from Fujian Xiangxinglong Fruit and Vegetable Co., Ltd. said in a recent exchange with FreshPlaza.

He said, "Our exports account for about 50%. So far, the total export volume is basically the same as that of the same period last year. In terms of the variety preference of consumers at home and abroad, overseas markets prefer red-flesh varieties, while the Chinese domestic market prefers new varieties, such as Hongmeiren."

In Pinghe, Fujian Province, which is the main production area of honey pomelo in China, the total planting area of honey pomelo has been relatively stable in recent years, but the variety structure is quietly changing. Specifically, the proportion of red-flesh varieties continues to increase. At the same time, yellow-flesh varieties have withdrawn from the planting base year by year.
