Peru’s Ica table grape region aims for $8 billion worth of exports in 2022-2023 campaign

The Peruvian table grape production area in the province of Ica, which provides close to 50% of this country’s volumes, is aiming to earn $8 billion as it plans to exceed last year’s exports with 265,000 tons of table grapes during the current 2022-2023 campaign. Peru’s National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) has said the new markets of Israel, Japan and Chile will join the list of destination markets that will receive their table grapes this season.

The Don Ricardo team

One of the largest table grape producers and exports based in Ica, Peru is Don Ricardo led by Rafael Ibarguren Rocha, general manager, who said at a Senasa launch event to open the table grape season, they are proud to represent Peru in the most demanding markets in the world.

"Today, the world not only requires white, red and black grapes, but is also looking for special characteristics, flavours, aromas and of course long-haul conditions, which is the most challenging thing in Peru, we are very far away from international markets and our main challenge is to produce grapes of the highest quality that can travel for a minimum of 30 days in a refrigerated container. This year we must exceed 8 billion dollars in exports. In this grape campaign 2022 – 2023, in Don Ricardo we will continue to leave Peru on a high, enjoying the experience of working with excellence to share high quality grapes to the world and bring progress to more Peruvian families," he stated.

According to Julio Vivas Bancallan, director of the Senasa Plant Quarantine Sub-directorate: “Senasa has an important role in the issue of agricultural exports and one of them is the maintenance of the markets and we have 92 international markets for table grapes.”

The Association of Table Grape Producers of Peru (Provid) estimates the country will reach 71.5 million boxes reaching more than 600,000 tons of table grapes exports during the 2022-2023 campaign. They estimate exports are projected to increase by 11% over the previous season when the country exported 544,310 tons. New generation cultivars that are more productive lead the way in the increase of volumes.
