First container ship cleared at new HHLA Terminal Trieste (PLT)

The first container ship has been cleared at HHLA's Italian multi-purpose terminal in Trieste. It was the "OPS Hamburg", chartered and operated by CMA CGM, the Port of Hamburg reports.

For the first time, a container ship has called at the Italian multipurpose terminal "Piattaforma Logistica Trieste" (PLT). The "OPS Hamburg" was handled quickly and efficiently. The vessel is operated by leading shipping and logistics company CMA CGM and is part of its TMX3 service, which connects Turkey with the Adriatic Sea on a weekly basis.

Antonio Barbara, Managing Director of HHLA PLT: "We were delighted to welcome the "OPS Hamburg" to our terminal. The name of the ship is undoubtedly a good omen, emphasizing the link between Trieste and our majority shareholder HHLA in Hamburg. The vessel inaugurates a new regular service of CMA CGM - the TMX3, which connects Turkey with HHLA PLT Italy in the port of Trieste. This TMX3 service is an important step for our terminal. We thank CMA CGM Group for choosing HHLA PLT Italy."

Paolo Lo Bianco, Managing Director of CMA CGM Italy, said: "The TMX3 service offers one of the best transit times between Western Turkey and the Northern Adriatic - Italy and Slovenia - with a sailing time of three and a half days between Gemlik and Trieste and four days between Gemlik and Koper. Our service is a sustainable alternative to trucking, not only reducing CO2 emissions, but also optimizes transportation time, frequency and cost. Intermodal door-to-door solutions, including 45-foot PW containers, complement this product."

The HHLA PLT multipurpose terminal is an important component of the Italian seaport of Trieste and is located in the free port zone. Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has acquired a majority stake in the terminal. The 27-hectare port facility consists of an area for handling various general cargo and a newly constructed area with sufficiently deep berths for RoRo and container ships.

As a logistics hub on the Baltic-Adriatic line, Trieste is not only very well connected to Central and Eastern Europe, but also offers connections as far as the Baltic Sea region. PLT will use this strategically important position to strengthen environmentally friendly rail transport with the European hinterland.
