India's onion exports are expected to exceed last year's 1.15 million tons, supported by stable production, favourable weather, and consistent overseas demand, according to an industry expert.
Steady supply from key onion-producing regions, including Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, and Jalgaon in Maharashtra, along with Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka, has ensured smooth trade movement. Regular harvesting, efficient transport systems, and government monitoring mechanisms have contributed to stable market conditions and uninterrupted export flows.
The expert noted that Light Red Onions have become the leading variety for export due to their longer shelf life and firm bulb formation. Onions from Nashik remain preferred in international markets for their mild, balanced pungency, which aligns with consumer preferences in Middle Eastern markets compared with Pakistani or Egyptian onions.
The Bellary Rose Onion continues to maintain demand among South Indian communities abroad. It is widely used in foodservice and retail sectors, particularly in whole form for salads and traditional preparations such as sambar.
With export demand steady and domestic availability improving, traders expect volumes in the 2024–25 season to surpass last year's total.
