Maharashtra forms committee to draft onion policy

A new committee is established in Maharashtra, India, led by Pasha Patel, the State Agricultural Price Commission Chairman, focusing on persistent onion-related concerns impacting farmers, consumers, and government operations. This move, initiated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to devise a robust policy encompassing production, storage, and export strategies.

Patel emphasized, "Every year, onions bring tears to farmers, consumers, and the government. As the largest onion-producing and exporting state in the country, there was a need for a comprehensive policy on onion production, productivity, storage, and exports." The committee, comprised of various experts and officials, is tasked with delivering a report within a specific timeframe to address these challenges.

Maharashtra holds a major position in India's onion production and export sector, accounting for approximately 34% of the nation's output and 40% of exports. Despite this, the state faces obstacles such as price volatility, inadequate storage solutions, and erratic export policies, leading to trade disruptions.

The newly formed committee, chaired by Patel, includes notable members like the Director of Marketing of Maharashtra State, among others from different relevant departments. Their mission focuses on formulating a policy for stabilizing prices, enhancing storage capacities, promoting exports, and implementing market reforms for farmer welfare.

The committee will submit an interim report within a month, followed by bi-monthly progress reports during its six-month duration. A final report, along with a draft policy and action plan, will be presented before the end of its term.
