Florida corn production has wrapped up for the season. At Long & Scott Farms, it grows and ships a specialty corn, Scott's Zellwood Triple Sweet Gourmet Corn™ and it finished shipping last week.
The grower-shipper grows this variety of corn in two seasons: April 20th to June 10th, though this year finished slightly early thanks to some rain and heat that arrived earlier than normal. Then, production begins again on September 20th and goes until the end of November.
Growing conditions in Florida
For corn growing in Florida, it was an excellent growing season this year. "It was a dry growing season which really helps the corn," says Long & Scott's Hank Scott. That, in part, contributed to the ample commodity corn supply this season which has made for a challenging market.
For Long & Scott's Triple Sweet Gourmet corn, pricing was set at .75 cents/ear this year or $1.25/ear at retail. "I think the general corn market is terrible with Georgia even at $6-$7/crate," says Scott, adding that pricing last year at this time was $10-$11/crate. "That was the price for most of the season down south. As soon as it got to Georgia this year, they dropped it to $8-$10 and now it's at $6-$7."
