Stefano Renzelli - Coveser

Smart fruit and vegetable chain: tailor-made solutions for sustainable agriculture

Coveser, a company specialising in food processing and packaging machinery with a focus on fruit and vegetables, stems from the Renzelli family's 40 years of experience in industrial design. "We follow the entire post-harvesting process - from fresh handling, to dosing and primary and secondary packaging. Alongside our customised solutions, we have also developed a range of standard, modular and reliable systems designed to respond quickly to the most common requests," explains Stefano Renzelli, mechanical and system project manager.

Each system is the result of a direct discussion with the customer, and focuses on efficiency, flexibility and sustainability in line with the principles of Industry 4.0. "We operate in Italy and abroad, adapting each project to the context. Coveser represents the evolution of the know-how gained by the family since the 1980s, orienting it towards advanced and easy-to-use technologies ideal for the food sector, and for the fruit and vegetable chain in particular.

From fresh produce to processing
"We offer complete solutions for every processing stage. As for the fresh produce, we have developed integrated systems for both gentle and traditional handling, flanked by technologies for washing, sorting and grading the products. We manage packaging for both retail (trays, boxes, bags) and transport in large containers such as big bags, thereby meeting the needs of farms, processors, big retail chains and wholesale markets. For processing, we provide lines ranging from the production of purees, compotes, sauces and juices to final packaging. They include systems for product processing, dosing of creams and semi-liquid mixtures, and secondary packaging. Each stage is designed to ensure operational continuity, consistent quality and high process efficiency."

Weighing and packaging machine

"We design systems that easily integrate into different production contexts, adapting to the variety of formats, capacities and product types typical of this sector. Our approach is strongly oriented towards customisation: we listen to the specific needs of each customer and develop tailor-made technical solutions optimised according to the space available, the volumes to be handled and the characteristics of the product handled."

Tailor-made technology for vegetables, fruits and processed products
"Our machines are designed to adapt to different products, but they are certainly very effective with potatoes, onions, carrots, courgettes, peppers, tomatoes and soft fruit. The automatic weighing machines are widely used on products such as tomatoes, peppers, courgettes and leafy vegetables, where it is essential to ensure weight accuracy without damaging the product. Filling machines, particularly our fillers for semi-liquid products, are ideal for fruits processed into creams, purees, sauces or juices, ensuring volume consistency and speed in the work cycle. The labelling machines can be easily integrated on both rigid and flexible packages and allow quick format changes, which is very useful for productions involving multiple products. Finally, the packaging machines have been developed to cover very different needs: from packaging in trays or boxes for the big retail chains, to more robust solutions for crates, bags and big bags destined for logistics or the processing industry".

Multifunctional bench

Industry 4.0
Coveser's approach to Industry 4.0 translates into the development of smart systems, designed to ensure interconnection between machines, control of energy consumption and reduction of operating errors. Each line can be equipped with real-time monitoring systems for production, functional parameters and energy performance, allowing operators to intervene promptly in the event of anomalies.

"The integration of advanced diagnostic modules allows the analysis of faults and inefficiencies, generating useful reports for predictive maintenance. Remote assistance is also provided in many cases, to ensure immediate support even for plants installed abroad. This approach helps increase the overall reliability of the system, improve process traceability and reduce downtime and waste."

Coveser promotes sustainable technologies with eco-efficiency and waste reduction. Renzelli indicates how this fits in with the needs of the fruit and vegetable sector: "Sustainability means reconciling production efficiency and respect for the environment, also in the fruit and vegetable sector. Our solutions are designed to reduce product waste, minimise waste materials, and optimise energy consumption thanks to the use of highly efficient components and optimised work cycles. We design machines that enable precise dosing, calibrated packaging and smart waste management, thereby reducing the environmental impact without compromising productivity. In addition, where possible, we integrate more sustainable packaging materials such as recyclable films or high-yield solutions with minimal use of plastic, in line with the increasingly discerning demands of the big retail trade and the end consumers."

A particularly significant international example of Coveser's work
"A recent and significant case is the line we produced for a Middle Eastern company specialising in ready-to-eat single portions. We developed a complete line: dosing of the product into trays, weight control, automatic positioning using pick&place systems, and final packaging. The project required an in-depth study of the speeds involved and the particularly specific characteristics of the formats, with the aim of guaranteeing high standards of quality, efficiency and resistance at every stage."

What about future innovations or trends?
"We are working on greater integration between robotics and smart sensors to improve product handling and automate complex stages such as positioning or sorting. In parallel, we are developing new solutions for sustainable packaging with stretch film, recyclable materials and low-impact systems. Digitisation will be increasingly central, also for full traceability and predictive analysis of production data."

Bin tipper

Confirming its open and innovation-oriented vision, the company actively collaborates with universities, research centres, agricultural businesses and companies in the sector to develop advanced solutions in the processing and packaging of fruit and vegetables. "We strongly believe in teamwork: bringing together different skills allows us to face complex challenges, share know-how and bring forward high-tech solutions increasingly targeted to the real needs of the market," concludes Renzelli.
