Mexico has positioned itself as the top lemon producer for 2024, driven by favorable weather and expanding cultivation areas. According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Mexico is projected to produce approximately 3.5 million metric tons in the 2024/2025 market year. This marks an 8% increase compared to the previous cycle, with exports predominantly to the United States.
The European Union, with a strong contribution from Spain, is expected to produce around 1.7 million metric tons, reflecting a 16% increase due to an exceptional harvest season. Turkey, on the other hand, anticipates producing a record 1.6 million metric tons, attributed to advantageous weather patterns.
Argentina, despite facing a slight decline in production to 1.4 million metric tons caused by less favorable weather conditions, has seen improvements in exports to the United States, even as overall exports remain subdued. South Africa projects a yield of 720,000 metric tons, marking a 10% increase, with predominant exports directed towards the European Union.
The demand for lemons continues to grow across various industries, including food, cosmetics, and cleaning products, on a global scale. With Mexico at the forefront, the global lemon market is influenced significantly by production and demand dynamics observed in these key regions.
