Red-skinned Ruby Roo nashi debuts at Hort Connections

Seeka Limited has introduced a new red-skinned nashi variety, Ruby Roo™, at the IFPA Member Event during the Hort Connections 2025 Conference in Brisbane, Australia. The variety, developed and grown in Bunbartha, Victoria, by Seeka Australia, is described as having a distinct red skin, white flesh, sweet flavour, and crisp texture.

According to Seeka CEO Michael Franks, Ruby Roo™ represents the company's effort to expand its premium produce range with differentiated fruit offerings. While the new nashi will not yet be available in New Zealand, it forms part of Seeka's broader strategy to diversify its fruit selection throughout the year.

Ruby Roo™ is positioned as suitable for various uses, including fresh consumption, lunchboxes, salads, and cheese pairings. It features a bold red appearance, a crunchy texture, and a sweet, clean flavour.

The variety originated in New Zealand and was developed through a collaboration between Seeka and Prevar, a commercial licensing company known for other fruit varieties, including Rockit and Lemonade apples. Amanda Lyon, Brand Manager at Prevar, noted that the red nashi was the result of years of research by the pear breeding team at Plant & Food Research, and offers what she described as a high-quality eating experience.
