The 2025 Chilean walnut harvest is complete. The harvest volume is 15 per cent higher than last year, but still 5 per cent below industry expectations. The Chandler variety shows smaller sizes and more shell spots, but the internal quality is impressive with better color and higher yields, according to a status report from Bösch Boden Spies and its Chilean partner Calbu.
Exports: Demand for in-shell walnuts picks up
By April 30, 2025, 3,574 tons of walnuts had been exported – an increase of 98 per cent compared to 2024. Chilean walnuts are particularly in demand in the following markets: Turkey (+201 per cent), Italy (+176 per cent), and Morocco (+6 per cent). Chile thus remains a key supplier on the international walnut market.
Contract status & market forecast
41.7 per cent of the harvest has already been sold, 12.8 per cent less than last year. The main reason for this is delayed demand from India, which has now picked up significantly. Despite stable prices, the situation remains uncertain, influenced by tariff disputes, cheap Chinese goods, and weather risks. Strong demand for medium-sized in-shell walnuts for processing could lead to an early shortage, it added.
Conclusion: Chile remains a key market for walnuts
"The 2025 walnut harvest confirms Chile's role as a reliable supplier for the European food retail sector," concluded the sales team at Bösch Boden Spies.
