"It's been a difficult season in the United States because of the tariffs that the U.S. imposed on Peru, like it did on most countries, but not on Mexico. The main challenges in that destination are Mexico's strong competition, the erroneous image of the Peruvian avocado, and the strict segmentation of the American market, where buyers demand very specific calibers," stated Adrian Bayly, commercial manager of Avos America.
Asia, especially China, presents itself as a promising destination. "There are future opportunities in the Asian market. Demand for avocados is still moderate, but the region has significant growth potential," Bayly stated.
Operational flexibility has been key to adapting. "Currently, we are not producers, so that gives us a much higher maneuverability," Bayly said. This allows them to adjust export volumes according to the behavior of each market, especially in seasons with falling prices or oversupply.
Citrus: Stability and programmed logisticsIn the case of citrus, the situation is different. W. Murcott mandarins, a seedless and easy-to-peel variety, lead exports to the United States and Europe. "The United States is the main market for the W. Murcott. This year, we plan to ship about 250 containers of citrus in total. The spot market, particularly for small mandarins in 15kg boxes, has shown some volatility, while large mandarins have maintained more stable prices," Bayly stated.
However, logistics present their own challenges. Late last year, high demand for containers in Chile during the cherry season generated shortages and increased logistics costs. "China's demand for Chilean cherries is monstrous and demands all logistical 'inputs', impacting other products," Bayly said.
Avos America's strategy is to diversify destinations and products to mitigate risks. "Having different channels and differentiated markets benefits us. It allows us to avoid risks and offer more options to our suppliers and customers," Bayly concluded.
