Chinese fresh pear exports to Argentina open a new chapter in the countries' bilateral agro-industrial trade. The Botou Dongfang Fruit company sent 2,597 boxes of fresh pears, weighing 17.5 tons and worth 183,000 yuan (approximately 25,420 dollars) to Argentina. This is the first entry of Chinese pears into the Argentine market, confirmed by customs in Shijiazhuang, Hebei.
Hebei is known for its fruit production, especially pears. Its exports reached 69,000 tons (+14.8%) worth 420 million yuan (+13.9%) in the first quarter of 2025, according to China News Service (CNS).
China is the world's leading pear producer with 8 million tons per year and 940,000 hectares cultivated. The expansion into markets like Argentina is part of a strategy to diversify and explore emerging markets. "After market research, we found that Latin America has a strong demand and continued recognition for Chinese-produced fruit," said Guo Yusen, general manager of Botou Dongfang Fruit.
Li Yuxiang, a customs official from Shijiazhuang, highlighted the role of customs in inspecting and supervising the production process. "We guide companies to strengthen self-inspection and self-monitoring, strictly enforcing toxic substance risk control and exotic pest surveillance," she said.
The arrival of Chinese fruit in the country generated reactions in Argentina's fruit sector. Nicolás Sánchez, president of the Argentine Chamber of Integrated Fruit Growers (CAFI), called for a review of bilateral protocols. "It's an opportunity for us to export freely to China, complying with phytosanitary protocols, without them being an impediment," he said.
Gabriel Grisanti, from the Tres Ases exporting company, said the opening of the Chinese market could be favorable, as long as fair conditions are ensured. "Those are the rules of the game for those of us who prepare to compete and work towards the world," he stated.
